And when I speak about courage, it doesnât mean that we donât harbour any fears. Fear is the price of admission to doing all that makes us feel most alive, and to live in the fire of aliveness is the best form of living. Fear will always be a passenger in our lives seeking to keep us safe from danger. However, we must not let it jump into the driving seat, because it can easily trick us into living a boring life and going down to our grave with all our hopes and dreams still buried deep inside.
At a deeper level, one of the most common fears that drains our precious energy reserves and prevents us moving forward is the fear of judgement. The ego thrives on this sort of fear, and the only way to put it out of a job is to understand that you can only be responsible for your own reactions, not everyone elseâs. Courage is the belief that you will be OK despite the fears you may have, the decision to follow your heart over your fears and making progress over perfection the focus. Develop a healthy relationship with fear and it will not only fuel your progress, but remind you how important it is to stretch beyond what you thought was possible.
The bolder your vision, the bigger the goals you will have, and this can be scary and exciting at the same time. How you approach this, however, will be the difference between procrastination and progress. And nothing kills progress faster than indecision. To avoid the overwhelm that can be experienced when pursuing big goals, the key is to break them down into smaller steps and tiny bite-size actions so that the path ahead doesnât feel as daunting. Start where you are, get some small wins under your belt, and it will give you the energy to continue moving forward.
Criticizing and pointing your finger at others while sitting on the sidelines is easy. Having the courage to take action on what is most important and daring to take that leap of faith into a future populated with unknowns, now that is harder to do. Itâs why you must have a vision of what success means to you, because those who do the work are more interested in their future than in their past. And the truth is that you will rarely be criticized by someone who is doing more than you, for they are far too busy taking action themselves on their own compelling vision to waste time judging others.
There is this fine line between wanting to do something and deciding to do it, and the side that you fall into will influence the intensity of your actions. Many of us donât trust ourselves enough to take a step into the abyss of the unknown. But everything in life is unknown until you try. Donât be afraid to be seen as starting as a beginner; every success story was a beginner once. And donât let overthinking and inaction kill those great ideas and opportunities of yours.
